The famous Scottish anthropologist James George Frazer wrote between 1890 and 1922 which is probably the most ambitious anthropology work ever written, “The Golden Branch”. This book was a study of the magical-religious beliefs of practically all the cultures of the world and concludes in a subtle way, given the period in which it was published, that the death of Jesus Christ was not fortuitously punishable to a delinquent but which reflected the cruel and barbarous tradition of what he called “the sacrifice of the king” and “the sacrifice of the king’s son”, which was carried out by most societies of antiquity. The Viacrucis is the artistic reflection of this macabre tradition. According to Christianity, Jesus Christ sacrifices himself so that no one should sacrifice anyone else and save humanity.
The work we are dealing with is a VIACRUCIS, the path of the Cross and death, made up of 14 paintings representing the different stations of the practice of Catholic devotion, made of wood, cloth, stucco, gold and polychrome. The work is preserved in its entirety unless by some cracks repaired in the back and some cracked in the paint of the frames caused for the antiquity of the piece.

From private collection of Catalonia.
