IBEJI SPIRIT FIGURE. YORUBA ETHNIA. NIGERIA. S. XIX-XX

Height: 27 cm

These figures carved into wood by the sculptor “Babalawo” or “father of mysteries” were used to house the soul of a twin in the image and resemblance of the mask of the family or clan. This practice helped to guarantee the survival of the other twin.
It is in perfect state of preservation, with metallic inlays in the eyes and a pretty organic patina of worship.
